African Turquoise

Important note: Despite its name, "African Turquoise" is not actually Turquoise — it is a variety of Jasper (microcrystalline Quartz) found in Africa that resembles Turquoise in color and appearance. It contains no copper or aluminum phosphate and is mineralogically unrelated to true Turquoise. The name is a trade name based on its visual similarity to Turquoise. This transparency is important to us — African Turquoise's beauty and metaphysical properties stand entirely on their own merits as a unique and distinctive Jasper.

Where It Is Found

African Turquoise Jasper is found primarily in Africa — with sources in several African countries including South Africa and other regions of the continent. Its exact geological source locations are not always precisely documented in the commercial crystal market.

Mineral Class / Geology

African Turquoise is a variety of Jasper (microcrystalline silicon dioxide, SiO₂) in the Tectosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Like all Jaspers, it is an opaque, fine-grained variety of Chalcedony (microcrystalline Quartz) colored by mineral impurities. Its distinctive teal-green color is caused by iron and copper mineral inclusions within the Quartz matrix, which give it its Turquoise-like appearance. The dark matrix veining is caused by inclusions of iron oxide or other dark minerals.

Colors

African Turquoise displays a distinctive teal to blue-green color with dark brown to black matrix veining and patches — closely resembling natural Turquoise in appearance. Each piece displays its own unique pattern of teal and dark matrix.
