Where It Is Found
Labradorite is found in several locations worldwide, with major sources in Canada (Labrador, from which it takes its name), Madagascar, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. The finest specimens displaying the most vibrant labradorescence come from Madagascar and Finland (where it is known as Spectrolite). Canada's Labrador region, where it was first described scientifically in 1770, remains a historically significant source.
Mineral Class / Geology
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral (calcium sodium aluminum silicate) belonging to the Plagioclase Feldspar series within the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. Labradorite forms in igneous rocks — particularly in mafic igneous rocks such as basalt, gabbro, and norite — as well as in some metamorphic rocks. Its most distinctive feature is labradorescence — a stunning optical phenomenon caused by light interference between thin, alternating layers of different feldspar compositions within the stone. These layers diffract light into brilliant flashes of blue, green, gold, orange, red, and violet.
Colors
Labradorite's base color is typically a dark grey to greyish-black, but its true beauty lies in its labradorescence — the iridescent play of color that flashes across its surface when light hits it at the right angle. Colors can include electric blue, teal, green, gold, orange, red, and violet, often appearing in combination within a single stone. No two pieces display exactly the same color pattern.
