LARVIKITE TUMBLE

Larvikite

This striking Larvikite Tumble is one of the most visually dramatic and geologically distinctive stones in the crystal world — its dark grey to black surface shimmers with a spectacular blue-silver flash of light known as schiller or labradorescence, creating a mesmerizing optical effect that seems to glow from within, and its powerful grounding and protective energy makes it an exceptional companion for inner work and psychic development.

Note: Larvikite (also spelled Larvikit) is named after the town of Larvik in Vestfold county, Norway, where it was first described. It is also known as Norwegian Moonstone, Blue Pearl Granite, or Black Labradorite in the crystal market — though it is not technically a Moonstone or Labradorite. It is one of Norway's most important natural stone exports and is widely used as an architectural stone worldwide.

Where It Is Found

Larvikite is found almost exclusively in the Larvik region of Vestfold county, Norway — specifically in the Larvik Plutonic Complex, a large igneous intrusion that formed approximately 298 million years ago during the Permian period. Norway is the world's only significant commercial source of Larvikite. The Larvik Plutonic Complex is one of the world's most famous examples of a syenite intrusion and has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark site.

Mineral Class / Geology

Larvikite is an igneous rock — specifically a type of monzonite or augite syenite — composed primarily of large crystals of ternary feldspar (a specific variety of alkali feldspar with a distinctive composition) along with augite (a pyroxene mineral), olivine, and other accessory minerals. Its hardness is approximately 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. The spectacular blue-silver schiller (optical flash) that makes Larvikite immediately recognizable is caused by thin-film interference within the layered structure of the ternary feldspar crystals — the same optical phenomenon responsible for the adularescence of Moonstone and the labradorescence of Labradorite. Light entering the feldspar crystals reflects off internal layers at different depths, causing the light waves to interfere with each other and produce the characteristic blue-silver flash. Larvikite formed when a large body of magma intruded into the Earth's crust during the Permian period and cooled slowly, allowing the large feldspar crystals to grow over millions of years.

Colors

Larvikite displays a dark grey to blue-grey to black base color with a spectacular blue to silver schiller — a flash of iridescent light that moves across the surface as the viewing angle changes. The schiller ranges from pale silver-blue to vivid electric blue depending on the specimen and lighting conditions.

Metaphysical Properties

Larvikite is known as the Stone of Inner Vision, Grounding, and Psychic Protection. Its dark, shimmering energy combines deep Earth grounding with the expansive, visionary quality of its blue schiller. It resonates with the Root and Third Eye Chakras and is used to provide powerful grounding and protection against negative energies, enhance psychic abilities and inner vision, support deep inner work, shadow work, and self-reflection, cancel and neutralize negative spells or unwanted energies, connect with the wisdom of nature spirits and the elemental world, enhance patience and the ability to make decisions slowly and wisely, and bring a sense of calm, grounded inner strength and clarity.
