MOOKAITE TUMBLE

Mookaite Jasper

This vibrant Mookaite Tumble is one of the most visually stunning and uniquely Australian stones in the crystal world — its bold, swirling palette of deep reds, burgundy, mustard yellow, cream, and purple makes each piece a completely unique work of natural art, and its grounding, adventurous energy makes it an exceptional companion for embracing change and living fully in the present.

Note: Mookaite (also spelled Mookite or Mookalite) is found exclusively in Australia and is named after Mooka Creek in Western Australia, near the Kennedy Ranges, where it was first discovered. It is sometimes called Australian Jasper or Mookaite Jasper.

Where It Is Found

Mookaite is found exclusively in Australia — specifically in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia, near Mooka Creek (from which it takes its name). It is a uniquely Australian stone and cannot be found anywhere else in the world, making it a genuinely rare and geographically distinctive specimen.

Mineral Class / Geology

Mookaite is a variety of silicified radiolarite — a sedimentary rock formed from the accumulated skeletal remains of radiolaria, microscopic single-celled marine organisms with intricate silica skeletons, that lived in ancient seas approximately 65–145 million years ago (Cretaceous period). Over millions of years, these silica-rich sediments were compacted and silicified into the hard, colorful stone we know as Mookaite. It belongs to the broader Jasper / Chalcedony family (microcrystalline Quartz, SiO₂) with a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Its extraordinary range of colors — reds, yellows, purples, and creams — is caused by varying concentrations of iron oxides and other mineral impurities within the silicified sediment.

Colors

Mookaite displays one of the most vibrant and varied color palettes of any Jasper — bold swirls and bands of deep burgundy red, mustard yellow, cream, purple, mauve, and white, often in dramatic, flowing patterns. No two pieces are ever alike. The colors can range from a single dominant tone to a rich, multi-colored mosaic depending on the specific deposit.
