PINK TOURMALINE TUMBLE

Pink Tourmaline

This beautiful Pink Tourmaline Tumble is one of the most beloved heart-healing stones in the crystal world — its delicate spectrum of pale blush to deep rose pink carries a gentle, high-vibrational energy of unconditional love, emotional healing, and compassion that makes it an exceptional companion for anyone on a journey of opening and healing the heart.

Note: Pink Tourmaline is also known as Rubellite when it displays a deep, vivid red-pink color. The name Tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word tōramalli, meaning "mixed gems" — a reference to the wide variety of colors in which Tourmaline occurs. Pink Tourmaline is the birthstone for October.

Where It Is Found

Pink Tourmaline is found in several locations worldwide, with major sources in Brazil (particularly Minas Gerais state, one of the world's most important sources of gem-quality Tourmaline), Afghanistan, Pakistan (the Kunar and Nuristan provinces), Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, and the United States (Maine and California, where the famous Tourmaline mines of San Diego County have produced exceptional specimens). Brazil and Afghanistan are the primary commercial sources of Pink Tourmaline in the crystal market.

Mineral Class / Geology

Pink Tourmaline is a variety of the Tourmaline mineral group — specifically the iron-magnesium-aluminum boron silicate variety known as Elbaite (named after the island of Elba, Italy, where it was first described). Tourmaline belongs to the Cyclosilicate mineral class with a hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale. Tourmaline has one of the most complex chemical compositions of any mineral group, with the general formula (Na,Ca)(Mg,Fe,Li,Al)₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH,F)₄. It forms primarily in granitic pegmatites — coarse-grained igneous rocks that form from the last, most chemically enriched fluids of a cooling granite magma — where the presence of boron, lithium, and other rare elements allows Tourmaline to crystallize in its remarkable variety of colors. Pink Tourmaline's color is caused by manganese within the crystal structure. Tourmaline is also strongly piezoelectric and pyroelectric — it generates an electric charge when pressure is applied or when heated, a property that has made it useful in scientific instruments.

Colors

Pink Tourmaline displays a delicate to vivid spectrum of pale blush pink, rose pink, hot pink, and deep red-pink (Rubellite). It is typically translucent to transparent with a vitreous luster. The color can vary significantly within a single crystal, sometimes displaying color zoning from pale to deep pink.
