SODALITE TUMBLE

Sodalite

This beautiful Sodalite Tumble is one of the most intellectually stimulating and mentally clarifying stones in the crystal world — its deep royal blue color with characteristic white Calcite veining is immediately striking, and its powerful energy of logic, truth, and rational thought makes it an exceptional companion for students, writers, researchers, and anyone seeking to think more clearly and communicate more authentically.

Note: Sodalite is frequently confused with Lapis Lazuli — both are deep blue stones with white veining — but they are distinct minerals with different compositions and properties. Sodalite lacks the golden Pyrite flecks characteristic of Lapis Lazuli, has a more uniform blue color, and is generally more affordable. Sodalite is also a major component of Lapis Lazuli — Lapis is a rock composed primarily of Lazurite (a Sodalite-group mineral), Calcite, and Pyrite. Sodalite is also known as Princess Blue in some markets.

Where It Is Found

Sodalite is found in several locations worldwide, with major sources in Brazil (the primary commercial source of Sodalite for the crystal market, particularly Bahia state), Canada (Ontario — the famous Bancroft area, and Greenland), Namibia, India, Russia, and the United States. A notable historical source is Litchfield, Ontario, Canada, where a large deposit of pink-orange Sodalite (called Hackmanite) was discovered in 1891 and presented to Princess Margaret of England — giving rise to the name "Princess Blue." Sodalite is also found in the famous Sar-e-Sang lapis lazuli mines of Afghanistan, where it occurs alongside Lapis Lazuli.

Mineral Class / Geology

Sodalite is a sodium aluminum silicate chloride mineral (Na₈Al₆Si₆O₂₄Cl₂) belonging to the Sodalite group within the Tectosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale. It forms primarily in alkaline igneous rocks — particularly nepheline syenites and phonolites — where sodium-rich, silica-poor magmas crystallize. Its deep blue color is caused by the presence of sulfur radical anions (S₃⁻) within the crystal structure — the same chromophore responsible for the blue color of Lapis Lazuli's Lazurite component. The white veining characteristic of Sodalite specimens is caused by inclusions of white Calcite or Natrolite. A remarkable variety of Sodalite called Hackmanite displays tenebrescence — it changes color from white or pale pink to deep violet when exposed to UV light or sunlight, then fades back to its original color in the dark. This reversible color change is one of the most unusual optical phenomena in the mineral world.

Colors

Sodalite displays a deep royal blue to blue-grey color with characteristic white Calcite or Natrolite veining — creating a bold, graphic pattern. It lacks the golden Pyrite flecks of Lapis Lazuli. It has a vitreous luster and is typically opaque.

Metaphysical Properties

Sodalite is known as the Stone of Logic, Truth, and Rational Thought. It is sometimes called the "Poet's Stone" or "Thinker's Stone" for its ability to enhance mental clarity, rational analysis, and the authentic expression of truth. It resonates with the Throat and Third Eye Chakras and is used to enhance logical thinking, rational analysis, and mental clarity, support the pursuit and expression of truth, enhance communication and the ability to articulate complex ideas, calm an overactive mind and reduce mental confusion, support academic study, research, and intellectual work, enhance intuition and the integration of logic with inner knowing, boost self-confidence and self-expression, and bring a sense of calm, ordered mental clarity and authentic self-expression.
