Black Tourmaline (Schorl) is an iron aluminum boron silicate (NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄) in the Cyclosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale. It forms in granitic pegmatites and metamorphic rocks. Its jet black color is caused by high iron content. Tourmaline is strongly piezoelectric and pyroelectric and displays characteristic vertical striations along its crystal length. In cluster form, multiple crystals have grown together from a shared base, creating a radiating, multi-directional display of natural crystal terminations.
