Mineral Class / Geology
Pink Tourmaline is a variety of Elbaite Tourmaline (sodium lithium aluminum boron silicate) in the Cyclosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale. It forms in granitic pegmatites where boron, lithium, and manganese-rich fluids allow Elbaite to crystallize in its characteristic pink color. The matrix (host rock) is typically quartz, feldspar, or lepidolite — the other minerals that crystallize alongside Tourmaline in the pegmatite environment. Seeing Tourmaline in its matrix provides a rare window into the geological environment in which it formed, showing the natural relationship between the Tourmaline crystals and their surrounding rock.
