Selenite is a variety of Gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O) and belongs to the Sulfate mineral class. Its hardness is 2 on the Mohs scale — handle with care and keep away from water. Selenite forms in evaporite deposits where ancient seas or lakes slowly evaporated over millions of years.

Selenite is typically translucent to transparent white or colorless, with a distinctive pearlescent, silky luster. Its flat, polished surface makes it ideal for placing crystals and objects upon it for cleansing and charging.
