Amethyst is a variety of Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) and is part of the Tectosilicate mineral class. It forms in geodes, alluvial deposits, and hydrothermal veins. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable and widely used gemstone. The purple color is caused by iron impurities within the crystal structure combined with natural irradiation.
