Mineral Class / Geology

Polychrome Jasper is a variety of Jasper, an opaque, fine-grained form of Chalcedony (microcrystalline SiO₂) in the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Its extraordinary multicolored patterns are caused by varying concentrations of iron oxides and other mineral impurities within the silica matrix.

Polychrome Jasper displays a stunning palette of earthy tones including terracotta red, burnt orange, golden yellow, cream, brown, grey, and sometimes green or blue-grey — all swirling together in patterns that evoke desert landscapes, sunsets, and ancient earth formations.
