Where It Is Found

Shungite is found exclusively in the Karelia region of Russia, near the village of Shunga on the shores of Lake Onega, from which it takes its name. It is one of the most geographically exclusive minerals on Earth.

Mineral Class / Geology

Shungite is a non-crystalline mineraloid composed primarily of carbon, approximately 2 billion years old. It is the only natural mineral known to contain fullerenes (C₆₀ "Buckyballs") — hollow carbon molecules whose discovery earned the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Its hardness is approximately 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale. It is electrically conductive due to its high carbon content. Beads may leave a slight black residue — this is normal.

Colors

Shungite is jet black to dark grey with a matte to slightly metallic luster. Each bead in this bracelet displays the characteristic deep, uniform black of this ancient carbon mineral.
