Black Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂), in the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. The black color is caused by carbon or manganese inclusions within the Chalcedony matrix, or through natural or artificial dyeing processes.
