Nephrite Jade is found primarily in Canada (British Columbia, one of the world's largest producers), China (Xinjiang province, the historic source of Chinese Jade), Russia, New Zealand (where it is called Pounamu and is deeply sacred to the Māori people), Australia, and the United States (Wyoming).

Mineral Class / Geology

Nephrite is a variety of the mineral Actinolite (calcium magnesium iron silicate, Ca₂(Mg,Fe)₅Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂) belonging to the Amphibole mineral group within the Inosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. Nephrite forms in serpentinized ultramafic metamorphic rocks under high-pressure conditions. Its exceptional toughness — greater than steel — comes from its densely interlocking fibrous crystal structure, which resists fracturing even under significant force. This toughness made Nephrite the preferred material for tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects across many ancient cultures.

Colors

Nephrite Jade displays deep, rich greens — from dark forest green and spinach green to lighter apple green — with a characteristic waxy to greasy luster. It is typically opaque to translucent with a smooth, dense texture.
