Howlite is found in Canada (Nova Scotia, where it was first discovered in 1868 by Henry How, after whom it is named), United States (California), Mexico, Turkey, and Germany.

Mineral Class / Geology

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral (Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅) in the Borate mineral class, with a hardness of 3–3.5 on the Mohs scale. It forms in evaporite deposits and its dark grey veining is caused by carbon or manganese oxide inclusions.

Natural Howlite is white to light grey with distinctive dark grey to black veining — a striking, marble-like pattern. The point form showcases this pattern across its polished faces.
