CARNELIAN TUMBLE

Carnelian

This vibrant Carnelian Tumble is one of the most energizing and motivating stones in the crystal world — its warm, fiery tones of orange, red, and amber have been prized for over 4,500 years as a stone of courage, vitality, and bold action, making it an exceptional companion for anyone ready to pursue their passions with confidence and creative fire.

Where It Is Found

Carnelian is found in several locations worldwide, with major sources in India (one of the world's oldest and most significant sources, particularly the Ratanpur and Cambay regions of Gujarat), Brazil, Madagascar, Uruguay, and the United States. India has been mining and trading Carnelian for over 4,000 years — ancient Carnelian beads from the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2500 BCE) are among the oldest known gemstone artifacts in the world.

Mineral Class / Geology

Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony (microcrystalline silicon dioxide, SiO₂) in the Tectosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. It belongs to the broader Quartz family and forms in volcanic rocks — particularly in the cavities and vesicles of basaltic lava flows — as well as in sedimentary deposits. Its warm orange to red color is caused by iron oxide (hematite) impurities within the Chalcedony matrix. Carnelian is closely related to Sard (a darker, browner variety) and Sardonyx (banded Carnelian and white Chalcedony). Historically, Carnelian was one of the most important gemstones of the ancient world — used extensively in Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Islamic jewelry, seals, and amulets. Napoleon Bonaparte famously wore a Carnelian seal ring captured during his Egyptian campaign.

Colors

Carnelian displays a warm spectrum of orange, red-orange, and reddish-brown — from pale peach and honey orange to deep, saturated blood red. It has a waxy to vitreous luster and is typically translucent to opaque. The color can vary significantly within a single piece, creating beautiful natural gradients.

Metaphysical Properties
