Where It Is Found

Cobaltoan Calcite is found primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo (particularly the Katanga/Shaba region), as well as in Morocco and a few other locations. The DRC produces the finest and most vibrant specimens.

Cobaltoan Calcite is a cobalt-bearing variety of Calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) and belongs to the Carbonate mineral class. Its hardness is 3 on the Mohs scale — handle with care and avoid acids. Its extraordinary vivid pink to magenta color is caused by the substitution of cobalt (Co) for calcium (Ca) within the crystal structure.
