Where It Is Found

Crazy Lace Agate is found almost exclusively in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, where it formed approximately 65–90 million years ago in limestone deposits. Its unique, complex banding patterns are unlike those of any other Agate variety in the world.

Mineral Class / Geology

Crazy Lace Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂), in the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Unlike most Agates which form in volcanic rock, Crazy Lace Agate formed in limestone, giving it its uniquely complex, swirling banding patterns caused by iron and aluminum inclusions.
