Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral (Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂) belonging to the Carbonate mineral class. Its hardness is 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits. Its vivid green color is caused by copper — the same element that gives the Statue of Liberty its green patina.
