Where It Is Found

Moss Agate is found worldwide, with major sources in India (one of the largest producers), the United States, Brazil, Uruguay, and central Europe. India produces some of the finest Moss Agate specimens with well-defined green inclusions.

Mineral Class / Geology

Moss Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂), in the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Despite its name, Moss Agate is not a true Agate as it lacks the characteristic banding. Its moss-like inclusions are formed by minerals such as chlorite, hornblende, or manganese oxide that crystallize in dendritic patterns within the Chalcedony.

Colors

Moss Agate displays a translucent to semi-transparent white, grey, or colorless base with green, blue-green, or occasionally red and brown moss-like or dendritic inclusions. The inclusions create patterns that closely resemble moss, lichen, or miniature landscapes, giving each piece a unique, organic appearance.
