SHUNGITE TUMBLE

Shungite

This powerful Shungite Tumble is one of the most scientifically fascinating and energetically unique stones in the crystal world — an ancient carbon-rich mineral over 2 billion years old, found only in one place on Earth, and the only natural mineral known to contain fullerenes — hollow, cage-like carbon molecules that have captivated scientists since their discovery earned a Nobel Prize in 1996.

Important note on EMF claims: Shungite is widely marketed for EMF (electromagnetic field) protection. While Shungite does contain electrically conductive carbon and has genuine scientific interest, the specific claim that it blocks or neutralizes EMF radiation from devices is not currently supported by peer-reviewed scientific evidence. We present Shungite's genuine scientific properties honestly and leave metaphysical and protective applications to the individual's own experience and discernment.

Where It Is Found

Shungite is found exclusively in the Karelia region of Russia — specifically near the village of Shunga on the shores of Lake Onega, from which it takes its name. The Zazhoginskoye deposit in Karelia is the world's only significant source of Shungite. This geographic exclusivity makes it a genuinely rare and distinctive mineral.

Mineral Class / Geology

Shungite is a non-crystalline mineraloid composed primarily of carbon (approximately 98% in elite/noble Shungite, 30–80% in regular Shungite) with minor amounts of silicate minerals. It belongs to no standard mineral class due to its amorphous, non-crystalline carbon structure. Its hardness varies from approximately 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale. Shungite is estimated to be approximately 2 billion years old — predating complex life on Earth — making it one of the oldest carbon-rich deposits known. Its origin is debated: some scientists propose it formed from ancient organic matter (algae or other early life forms) in Precambrian seas; others suggest a meteoritic or abiogenic origin. What makes Shungite uniquely scientifically significant is the presence of fullerenes (C₆₀ and related molecules) — hollow, spherical carbon molecules also known as "Buckyballs" — which were first discovered in Shungite. The discovery of fullerenes earned the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Shungite is also electrically conductive due to its high carbon content — a property that distinguishes it from most other minerals.

Colors

Shungite is jet black to dark grey with a metallic to matte luster depending on its carbon content. Elite (Noble) Shungite has a bright, almost metallic silver-black luster; regular Shungite is more matte black. It may leave a slight black residue when handled — this is normal and due to its carbon content.

Metaphysical Properties

Shungite is known as the Stone of Protection, Purification, and Ancient Earth Energy. Its 2-billion-year age and unique carbon composition give it a deeply grounding, primordial energy. It resonates with the Root Chakra and is used to provide powerful energetic protection and shielding, purify and neutralize negative energies in the environment, ground and anchor one's energy to the Earth, support physical detoxification and wellbeing, bring a sense of stability, strength, and ancient Earth wisdom, and create a protective energetic field around the body and space.
