Smoky Quartz is found worldwide, with major sources in Brazil, Scotland (where it is the national gemstone), Switzerland, Australia, Madagascar, and the United States (particularly in Colorado and New Hampshire). Some of the finest specimens come from the Swiss Alps and Brazil.

Mineral Class / Geology

Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) and belongs to the Tectosilicate mineral class. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale. The smoky brown to black color is caused by natural irradiation of aluminum impurities within the crystal structure over millions of years. It forms in pegmatites, hydrothermal veins, and granite rocks.

Colors

Smoky Quartz ranges from pale, translucent grey-brown to deep, nearly opaque black (known as Morion). The most common shades are warm brown, smoky grey, and deep chocolate brown. The color is evenly distributed throughout the crystal and does not fade with light exposure.
