Where It Is Found

Sodalite is found primarily in Brazil (the primary commercial source), Canada (Ontario's Bancroft area), Namibia, India, Russia, and the United States. It also occurs in the famous Lapis Lazuli mines of Afghanistan.

Mineral Class / Geology

Sodalite is a sodium aluminum silicate chloride mineral (Na₈Al₆Si₆O₂₄Cl₂) in the Tectosilicate mineral class, with a hardness of 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale. It forms in alkaline igneous rocks. Its deep blue color is caused by sulfur radical anions (S₃⁻) within the crystal structure. The white veining is caused by Calcite or Natrolite inclusions.
