Where It Is Found

Tourmalinated Quartz is found primarily in Brazil (particularly Minas Gerais state, which is the world's primary commercial source), where Quartz and Black Tourmaline (Schorl) frequently form together in the same granitic pegmatite environments. Other sources include Madagascar, Pakistan, and the United States.

Mineral Class / Geology

Tourmalinated Quartz is a combination of two minerals: Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂, Tectosilicate class, hardness 7) and Black Tourmaline / Schorl (iron aluminum boron silicate, Cyclosilicate class, hardness 7–7.5). Both minerals form in granitic pegmatites — coarse-grained igneous rocks rich in silica, boron, and other elements. The Tourmaline needles grew first within the pegmatite cavity, and the Quartz subsequently crystallized around them, enclosing the Tourmaline inclusions within its crystal structure. The result is a Quartz crystal with perfectly preserved, needle-like Tourmaline crystals frozen within it — a natural snapshot of two minerals growing in the same geological environment millions of years ago. Tourmaline is strongly piezoelectric and pyroelectric — it generates an electric charge under pressure or heat — a property that is amplified by the surrounding Quartz.

Tourmalinated Quartz displays clear to smoky grey Quartz with bold, needle-like inclusions of jet black Tourmaline — creating a striking, graphic pattern that ranges from a few scattered needles to dense, overlapping networks of black within the clear crystal.
